This is probably one of the last cafés in Edinburgh I will write about, and that makes me slightly emotional. Chapter One Café in Dalry was one of many cafés along the street, yet it always stood out.
A café that feels quiet even when it is busy tells you everything about the kind of space it creates.
Located in Dalry, Chapter One Café is a fully vegan café in Edinburgh, offering everything from coffees and pastries to sandwiches. What makes it even more special is that Chapter One is recognised as Scotland’s first woman-owned vegan coffee shop, adding a deeper sense of purpose to the experience.
Atmosphere and Interior – A Cosy Vegan Café in Dalry
The atmosphere at Chapter One Café feels incredibly cosy. Plants are thoughtfully placed throughout the space, giving it the feeling of a small botanical garden rather than a café on a busy Edinburgh street.
Despite being popular and often busy, the café somehow maintains a calm and peaceful energy. It is the kind of place where conversations soften, time slows down, and you naturally feel encouraged to stay a little longer.
Coffee Highlights – Oat Cappuccino, Lavender Latte, and Biscoff Latte
Over time, I tried three different coffees here: the oat cappuccino, lavender latte, and Biscoff latte.
The oat cappuccino is smooth and balanced, with just the right level of caffeine to start the day. It is reliable, comforting, and consistently well made.
My personal favourite, however, is the lavender latte. It contains no caffeine and has one of the most beautiful presentations I have seen in a coffee. The sweetness is perfectly balanced, and every sip feels calming and almost therapeutic.
The Biscoff latte became my celebratory drink. Whenever I felt I had achieved something, this was my choice. The Biscoff blends beautifully with espresso, creating a drink that feels closer to dessert than coffee. It is indulgent without being overwhelming and easily replaces dessert on some days.
Vegan Pastries and Pricing
I also tried their vegan almond croissants, which honestly tasted better than many traditional almond croissants I have had elsewhere. The flavours were rich and satisfying, proving that vegan pastries can be just as indulgent as their non-vegan counterparts.
Prices are very fair for Edinburgh, with most coffees and pastries priced under £5, making Chapter One one of the more affordable cafés in Dalry. The quality easily justifies the cost.
Service and Experience
The people working at Chapter One Café are some of the kindest you will come across. Regardless of how busy the café gets, they always greet customers with warm smiles and genuine hospitality.
During quieter hours, it becomes the perfect place to read a feel-good book while enjoying the scenery outside. It is less about rushing through coffee and more about taking a moment for yourself.
A Goodbye to Chapter One Café
The last time I visited Chapter One was in December, when I stopped by briefly to grab a croissant during a trip back to Edinburgh. I am not sure when I will next have the chance to sit there again, now that I have fully moved away from the city.
But if you ever find yourself in Edinburgh, make it a priority to visit Chapter One Café in Dalry at least once.
Some cafés serve good coffee. Others become part of your memories.
