It has been quite a while since I last wrote something for Stories From Plates. It was one of those situations where I had the motivation to keep writing but not necessarily the time or energy. This time, I will be talking about Loco Mexicano on Victoria Street, a Mexican restaurant that turned out to be the perfect place for a farewell dinner.
One of my friends will be leaving London soon, so we decided to make the most of the remaining time by trying a few restaurants together before she leaves. That is how we stumbled upon Loco Mexicano.
First Impressions
One of the first things I liked about the restaurant was its location. Situated just a five-minute walk from Victoria Station, it is incredibly easy to reach whether you are travelling from central London or elsewhere in the city.
The restaurant had a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the moment we walked in. The colourful artwork and unique wall decorations created a vibrant setting that made it easy to switch off from the busy streets outside. There is also outdoor seating available, which makes it an attractive option during the summer months.
What We Ordered
To start, we ordered:
- Prawn Skewer with Chilli Salsa
- Margarita Mussels
For mains, we had:
- Spicy Chicken Tacos
- Peri Peri Chicken with Grilled Pineapple
Prawn Skewer with Chilli Salsa
The prawns were cooked perfectly, with a good balance of spice and flavour. The chilli salsa complemented the prawns well without overpowering them. My only criticism would be the portion size. At £11.95, I felt there could have been a few more prawns on the plate.
Margarita Mussels
This was easily one of my favourite dishes of the evening.
The mussels were served in a tequila-lime garlic sauce with onions and fresh tomatoes, accompanied by toasted garlic bread. Every element worked together beautifully. The mussels were tender, the sauce was packed with flavour, and the onions and tomatoes added freshness without taking attention away from the seafood.
The garlic bread was perfect for soaking up the remaining sauce, and despite being listed as a starter, it genuinely felt substantial enough to be a main course.
Peri Peri Chicken with Grilled Pineapple
The standout dish of the evening.
The portion size was incredibly generous, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. It was soft, juicy, and full of flavour, while the spice level was balanced enough to be enjoyable rather than overwhelming.
The grilled pineapple added a sweetness that complemented the peri peri seasoning surprisingly well. In fact, the portions were so large that the three of us struggled to finish the dish.
It is easily one of the best chicken dishes I have had in London in quite some time.
Spicy Chicken Tacos
The tacos were equally impressive.
Filled with shredded chicken, rice, salad, salsa, and cheese, they were both flavourful and satisfying. Every ingredient contributed something to the dish, and nothing felt unnecessary. They were filling without being heavy and provided a great balance of textures and flavours.
Value for Money
Excluding the sangria we ordered, the total bill came to roughly £100 for three people, which works out to around £33 per person.
Considering the amount of food we received, the quality of the dishes, and the generous portions, I felt this represented good value for money. The only item where I questioned the portion size was the prawn skewer, but seafood dishes often come at a premium, so it was understandable.
Service and Overall Experience
The staff were fantastic throughout the evening.
They were friendly, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. Good service can significantly influence a dining experience, and the team at Loco Mexicano certainly contributed to making the evening memorable.
Final Verdict
Good food often makes an occasion memorable, and that was certainly the case here.
Between the generous portions, flavourful dishes, welcoming atmosphere, and excellent service, Loco Mexicano turned out to be the perfect place to spend one final evening with a friend before they leave London.
If you are looking for a Mexican restaurant near Victoria Station, Loco Mexicano is definitely worth adding to your list.
Sometimes the best restaurants are not just about the food. They become part of the memories you create there.
